4 things that relate algebra to our daily lives

– 17 July, 2020

Algebra is more than just abstract tools, it is a tool that brings balance to our day to day decisions. Right from construction, to home decor, to working out in the gym- it is all but logical calculations that help us get better!

**Algebra** is a method to establish **a mathematical relationship** with everything that is around it. It uses symbols and letters to represent specific values, especially ones that do not have a specific quantity. Some of the most famous mathematicians, that have transformed the landscape of calculations, have discovered their profound formulas by their life experiences.

**Isaac Newton** to begin with, confirmed his theory of gravity to space-time, when the apple fell on his head! The famous Greek mathematician, **Erathothenos** discovered that earth is round when he stuck a rod into the ground to follow the pattern of stars! Even animals inspired some of the famous mathematical formulas- the Fibonacci sequence was discovered in how rabbits breed by **Leonardo Bigollo**. The butterfly effect as the name suggests inspired by how the wings flutter in a sequence by **Edward Lorenz**. And there are so many more…

The fact that algebra was found in daily consequences of life itself, is what makes it so profound. When you feel confused by the symbols, look at the significance that each holds. Although everything can be looked at mathematically not everything can be solved in numbers. Hence, **basic algebra!** There is a famous equation trending on the internet, the horseshoe equation- where you calculate the values of each symbol, in this equation the horse, horseshoe and cowboy boots and deduce what its value would be. All it takes is a simple BODMAS rule coupled with an **algebraic insight!**

Solves problems every day

**Algebra math** helps improve logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. And that is something we need in our everyday lives. It’s just that we don’t notice it! Let’s say folding clothes, for instance, requires symmetry. Placing your bottle precisely below the water purifier spout. Tucking in bedsheets in the exact corners ensuring that the design sits perfectly in the centre of the mattress! What do you think this requires- **linear algebra!** Our logical minds are so wired with information that even these statistically placed tasks seem void of a mathematical calculation.

Health comes at a calculation!

For all your health-freaks, hitting the gym or trying out a new diet- what is the first thing you do (well ideally the first thing you should do!). You calculate your BMI, which is your Body Mass Index. This tells you the exact amount of fat in your body, in comparison with the muscles, bone weight and height. So, then you realize that watching that weighing scale was but futile- now you need to focus on those inches. Do you think that apart from body weight, your fat has a numeric count? Only after **an algebraic calculation!**

Precision defines sports!

Love watching cricket or football? What do you think makes a fabulous player? Of course, it’s physical tenacity and athletic practice that makes them good. But it is also the practice that shapes their mathematical understanding of the game. What speed is the yorker at? How do I need to place my bat to hit that sixer on this spinner? What angle must I aim for that penalty? These aren’t the numerical calculations, but **symbolic calculations** that the mind perfects and after a point they become like reflex actions.

Interiors require measurements!

Let’s say you want to redecorate your living room. What do you do? Look up at new cabinets, a bookshelf, think of a sofa or a couch that would fit your taste. Maybe a change to the dinner table set? To go ahead and buy those you need to know the square feet area of your house and the exact measurements of the furniture that would fit in those spaces. While some might use the measuring tape to get it perfect to the T, some use one hand distance, or their fingers to calculate the right fit!

There are so many reasons to love algebra- the main one being our minds are already pretty calculative, it’s just that we need to trace the right symbol to those responses. If these examples still don’t convince you to fall in love with math, then why not watch these for yourself!

**MSVgo App** features Math videos on every chapter covered in **CBSE, ****ICSE, ISC** and **IGCSE** boards for **grades 6th to 12th**. Engaging videos provide conceptual clarity on topics we struggle to understand with self-study. Plus fun examples make it really easy to revise theories and formulas. Even algebra can be brought to life with **MSVgo**.
